Youth Cell Meeting - 22/01/2010

Open Topic Discussion: Why is it not right for Christians to use vulgarity?

Meaning of Vulgarity:
1. Characterized by ignorance of or lack of good breeding or taste: vulgar ostentation.
2. Indecent; obscene; lewd: a vulgar work; a vulgar gesture.
3. Crude; coarse; unrefined: a vulgar peasant.
4. Synonyms and related words:bad language, abusive language, cursing, cussing, dirty language, dirty talk, evil speaking, filthy language, foul language, obscenity, strong language, swearing, taboo language, vile language.

What are the some causes before, and results after using Vulgarity?
1. When a person is angry with another. It feels good to get back at the other person.
2. When a person is irritated or teased at. It feels bad if not use of using vulgarity.
3. When a person wants to show that he or she is the ‘Big Brother or Sister’. It feels cool to be in control and recognized as being respected and in command.

4. When it has become a habit, vulgarity is part of spoken words out from his or her mouth. It does not bother the person at all, because it seems natural to him or her.

What does the Bible says?

Ephesians 5:3-5, 18-20
3But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

18Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 10:19-21
19When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.
20The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value.
21The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgment.

Proverbs 16:23-24
23A wise man’s heart guides his mouth, and his lips promote instruction.b
24Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Proverbs 18:20-21
20From the fruit of his mouth a man’s stomach is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied.
21The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Matthew 12:36-37
36But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

James 3:5-12
5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 11Can both fresh water and salta water flow from the same spring? 12My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Conclusion:
As the Bible says in Eph 5:4-5, 4Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Also in James 3:5-6, 5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
Therefore, we must refrain ourselves from using vulgarity, as it doesn't please God. Rather, we should (Rom 12:2) not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your (our) mind. And (Eph 5:18-19) be filled with the Spirit. 19Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. As these (Proverbs 16:24) 24Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

There will be time that we find ourselves struggling, we should seek (John 14:26) the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. And come before God and pray, (Psalms 4:1) 1 Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer. (Psalms 119:133) 133 Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. Amen.

Shalom!
